Sun Moths Doing Well

2020 Sun Moth Update

Entosearch undertook its’ yearly survey in the Mid-North of South Australia during March to monitor population numbers of the Sun-Moth, Synemon selene.

This is a large, iconic sun-moth that once used to occur on the Adelaide Plains and Barossa Valley, but is now regarded as critically endangered in SA, being previously thought to be extinct until being rediscovered by Entosearch in 2015.

Beautiful calm sunny weather conditions made easy observations, and flying adults were observed at the breeding site. The area is quite exposed and windy, so spotting these moths has previously been a challenge.

Numerous adults of both sexes were observed, with male territorial battles occurring occasionally.

Since the discovery of this breeding population, numbers continue to grow, and the species and its’ habitat remain in a healthy state.
